What is Art Nouveau Silver Worth?

In general, if you have any piece of silver that is created in the Art Nouveau style which features ladies with flowing hair, cherubs, angels or other fantasy or ethereal like motiffs, you will likely receive more for it than just a scrap silver.

What is Art Nouveau? According to Wikipedia: Art Nouveau (/ˌɑːr(t) nuːˈvoʊ/ AR(T) noo-VOH; French: [aʁ nuvo] ; lit. 'New Art'), Jugendstil in German, is an international style of art, architecture, and applied art, especially the decorative arts. It was often inspired by natural forms such as the sinuous curves of plants and flowers.[1] Other characteristics of Art Nouveau were a sense of dynamism and movement, often given by asymmetry or whiplash lines, and the use of modern materials, particularly iron, glass, ceramics and later concrete, to create unusual forms and larger open spaces.[2] It was popular between 1890 and 1910 during the Belle Époque period,[3] and was a reaction against the academicism, eclecticismand historicism of 19th century architecture and decorative art.

There are several major manufacturers of the Art Nouveau style that operated in The United States at the end of the 19th Century and early part of the 20th Century. These include Unger Brothers, William B. Kerr, Alvin, Gorham, Reed & Barton, Tiffany & Co., George W. Shiebler & Co., and R. Blackington.

The most prolific manufacturer was Unger Brothers who had a female designer named Emma L. Dickinson - the wife of one of the brothers. She led the company into making incredible art nouveau designs of women with flowing hair in lines of jewelry and flatware. In today's market Unger Brothers art nouveau sterling silver is perhaps the most popular of all to collect. The flatware and hollowware can be worth $75-$150 per troy ounce retail and the jewelry items can fetch between $125 -$400 per troy ounce retail.

The same largely holds true for most other manufacturers as well regarding values, as long as it is a very well made piece that exhibits an appealing design aesthetic.

Conclusion: If you have any art nouveau style sterling silver, you are in the money! Don't sell it for just scrap silver price.
